Why the dialogue is hard to hear

It is the single most common complaint we get about television sound, and it is not your hearing. Modern flat screens have nowhere to put a speaker, so the drivers fire downwards or backwards out of a cabinet a few millimetres deep. What survives that is the mid-range, and mid-range is exactly where dialogue lives, competing with a soundtrack that was mixed in a studio with a proper centre channel.

A soundbar with a genuine centre channel fixes it, and it is worth knowing that not all of them have one. The cheap two-channel bars widen the sound without ever giving speech its own driver, which is why people buy one, feel briefly better and still reach for the subtitles. If dialogue is the problem you are trying to solve, that is the specification to check before anything else.

Common questions

Why can't I hear the dialogue on my TV?
Because the speakers in a flat screen fire down or backwards out of a cabinet with almost no depth, and speech is the first thing that loses. It is not your hearing and it is not the TV being faulty. A soundbar with a true centre channel, not a two-channel bar that only widens the sound, puts dialogue back on its own driver, and it is the single most satisfying upgrade most people make.
Soundbar or full surround sound?
A good soundbar in a living room usually beats a badly-placed surround system, and it is the right answer for most people. Surround earns its keep when you have a room you can arrange around a seating position and you want the effects to move behind you. If you are unsure, start with the bar and a subwoofer. We can build outward from that later without wasting what you have already bought.
Can you put speakers in the ceiling of an existing house?
Usually, yes. If there is a roof cavity above the room and a way to get cable to it, in-ceiling speakers go in with a cut-out and no visible run at all. The rooms that give trouble are downstairs ones with a floor above and concrete slabs. We check the cavity before quoting, so you know which it is before anybody cuts anything.
Will outdoor speakers survive Sydney weather?
Proper outdoor speakers will, and near the water it matters more than people expect: the same salt air that eats antennas gets into speaker grilles and terminals. What we fit is rated for outdoor use with sealed enclosures and stainless fixings, and mounted under an eave or a soffit where it can be. An indoor speaker on a patio will sound fine for one summer.
Can you use the speakers I already have?
Very often, and we would rather. Good passive speakers do not go out of date the way electronics do: a decent pair from fifteen years ago driven by a modern amplifier will embarrass most of what is sold as a package today. Bring them into the conversation before you replace anything.
Will it all work with one remote?
Yes, and that is part of the job rather than an extra. Sound systems are where households end up with four remotes and one person who knows the sequence. We set up HDMI-ARC and control so the TV remote runs the volume, and label the inputs so the buttons say what they do.
